Posted on January 8, 2008 in BenQ-Siemens

BenQ-Siemens A58The BenQ-Siemens A58 has a display of 128×128 pixels CSTN 65000 colors, Bluetooth, tri-band GSM and GPRS, a web browser, email client, vibrating alert, MP3 ringtones, PC synchronization, hands-free calling and Java. There is no camera, multimedia player or expandable memory to worry about here, making BenQ-Siemens A58 an attractive choice for businesses. BenQ-Siemens say that the A58 will be available in Europe from August 2006.

It is a lightweight phone, weighing only 85 grams. Despite the weight, the A58 manages six hours and 12 days of standby (obviously using Bluetooth will drain the battery faster). There is an RF connector on the back, so the A58 can be mounted into a car kit. It seems quite nice too, usually with a bullet Siemens-designed housing and two sub-systems of color Silver Mercury and Carbon Black.

There are some disadvantages - the main one being that the PC connectivity via a serial cable or Bluetooth only, there are no USB support. CSTN displays and tend to have a much lower quality than the more common (and more expensive) TFT panels.

There are surprisingly few players in the phone business without camera market segment. The most notable BenQ-Siemens A58 Silverrival to the BenQ-Siemens A58 is the Nokia 6021, which has a screen a little better, but much shorter battery life and no RF connector. If it was a Nokia it would sell like hot cakes, but BenQ-Siemens is not a name that most businesses are familiar with, so that the risk will be difficult.

The BenQ-Siemens A58 is a business-oriented phone that aims to put all the features of a business would need in a device the cheapest price possible. This is not a brand new phone based on the BenQ-Siemens A58 say that the will be available in Europe from August 2006. A58 Siemens A31 announced late last year, but with the addition of Bluetooth.

A summary of the characteristics indicates a phone that may have been designed by an accountant. BenQ-Siemens have just enough of the A58 to appeal to businesses, and no more. There is not really anything on the BenQ-Siemens A58, which could be considered wasteful or extravagant!
