BlackBerry 8707v Much Quickly Download Attachment

Posted on December 22, 2007 in BlackBerry

The BlackBerry 8707v is the first 3G BlackBerry device on the market. It is a derivative of the ubiquitous BlackBerry 8700 series of devices, and it seems to have the same features as the 8700, just with the data 3G UMTS 2100.

The v in 8707v indicates that this is a Vodafone. Vodafone Germany is the first region to announce that they will have the 8707v available in the very near future (hence the photo QWERTZ keyboard). It is likely that other operators will follow suit, but because it is a device UMTS 2100 (8700, it is a quad-band GSM too).

There are limits to the 8707v though. There is no WiFi, unlike some recent messaging devices, nor is there any expandable memory (internal memory consists of 64Mb of flash memory plus 16 MB of dynamic RAM). There is no MP3 player or camera either. Of course, many businesses actually want these limitations as it makes the device easier to handle.

As with the other 8700 series BlackBerries, the 8707v comes with a 320×240 pixel screen, a web browser, PIM functions and Bluetooth. It goes without saying that the BlackBerry 8707v supports Internet messaging protocols and standard BlackBerry push e-mail. Ah…well, we just said. It is also possible to display a wide variety of formats, including Microsoft Office, Corel WordPerfect and Adobe PDF files. But now the 8707v can download these attachments much more quickly.

Of course, when paired with a laptop, 3G BlackBerry 8707v can act as a modem quite respectable. It’s still kind of an embarrassment shape and format to use with a telephone, but then a Bluetooth headset a little help in this regard.

Vodafone Germany and RIM (who make the BlackBerry) say they 8707v will be available very soon, probably followed by other Vodafone regions and then we expect to see variations for other carriers to a later date.
