Motorola ROKR E2 Phones Combine 3G iTunes

Posted on December 25, 2007 in Motorola

We previewed the Motorola ROKR E2 last month, and Motorola have confirmed that the ROKR E2 will be available during the first half of 2006. However, while the ROKR E2 looks quite like the one we showed last month, the E2 is a very different underside of the camera pretty poor ROKR E1.

The biggest shock is that this is not an iTunes phones - Motorola is launching its own media player. And the surprises do not stop there - it is a phone based on Linux as well. Not only that, but Motorola have buried TransFlash memory and included a SD slot instead, giving the ROKR E2 up to 2Mb of memory and a capacity of 500 songs maximum. The screen has been upgraded to a unit QVGA 240×320 pixels, there is a 1.3 megapixel camera and also stereo Bluetooth. There is an FM radio, and flight mode too (so it can be used as a music player without having the telephone component active).

Thus, the ROKR E2 looks like a promising multimedia device, and it is much more competitive with the benchmark Sony Ericsson W800i. These are also attractive to look at. But

What exactly are Motorola play? We saw with the recent iTunes Motorola RAZR V3i phone, so the lack thereof in the ROKR E2 is a real surprise. We believe that this will lead to some confusion mark, and clients are simply not understand how those devices are iTunes (ie the ROKR E1 and RAZR V3i), and which are not. Sony Ericsson’s range is much clearer - the W550, W600, W800 and W900 are all “Walkman” phone that is intuitive and easy to understand. Motorola looks at the confusing array compared to that.

Another shortcoming of the ROKR E2 is that it is not a 3G phone, which deprives operators of potential earnings from over the air downloads. There is a rumor ROKR E3 however, that only could combine 3G and iTunes. Subscribe to our newsletter for updates on this point.
