This device goes a long way in dealing with a serious problem of the range Nokia phones - they have no big clamshell 3G devices. Oh yes, they have the Nokia N90, N92 and N93, but these phones are completely above the most customers.

The Nokia 7390 for its part, is looking very promising 3G handset, except that it is a way telephone so that it would not rely on the company. The only other phone in this category is the Nokia N75, but it is aimed at the American market only.

So, the Nokia 6290 has long been over Nokia’s range of phones. It is not in any way spectacular, but it comes back with exactly the type of features that most users want 3G. Internally, the 6290 is an excellent 2.2 inch 240×320 pixels in 16.7 million colors similar to that found on devices such as the Nokia 6131, it has a two megapixel camera as well as subcamera for a video call, and the Nokia 6290 also has expandable memory, a media player, document viewer and Bluetooth. There are some external Access keys which gives access to some of the functions on the phone when closed.

Significantly, the Nokia 6290 is a smartphone Symbian S60 delivering what Nokia dub S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1. At present, S60 is a mixed bag - a good number of Nokia S60 devices have recently suffered from a very buggy software, and there are indications that some users prefer the more basic version of the Series 40 Symbian (which found on the Nokia 7390). On the other hand, the smartphone functionality is required to make the best use of services such as X-3 Series.

If Nokia 6290 can obtain the right when it hits the stores, then it has a chance to carve out a significant market share of 3G. In our view, it would be far better to wait for Nokia to get the 6290 working properly before launching.

Say that the Nokia 6290 are expected to be available during the first quarter of 2007 at a cost unsubsidised around € 325 / £ 205 before tax, first black and pink variations. The Nokia 6290 is most probably a very important device Nokia, but at first glance you would think that this was just another way conservative style clamshell.
