At first glance, the Nokia N72 looks like a restyled Nokia N70 – in fact, this is a very closely related, but with an important difference. The Nokia N72 is the only Nseries phone (to date) who is not a 3G device – it is rather intended to markets 900/1800/1900 GSM and EDGE data networks. Rather than an EDGE version of the Nokia N70, N72 has strengthened some multimedia software, and is offered in two packages restyling a rose girlie combined and black for boys.

Physically, the N72 is exactly the same size as the N70 at 109×53x22mm, and only 2 grams to 124 grams lighter. The screen is the same screen 176×220 pixels found in the N70, but the N72 does not have a video camera appeal, although the layout of the keyboard does seem to be much less cramped than the N70. On the back of N72 is a digital camera 2 megapixel protected by a sliding mechanism, the N72 and the memory can be expanded using RS-MMC cards (128MB card is included as standard, compared to only 64 Mo on the N70). The Nokia N72 has an FM radio too, in addition to a player.

The N70 phone is a well regarded, with only two major shortcomings – the cramped keyboard and the screen resolution. Although the N72 is a way to solve the problem of keyboard, the display is still only 176×220 pixels, while others seem to be Nseries phones standardize on 240×320 pixels. Nokia is fairly safe ground here if the N70 phone is a very popular and with good reason.

The N72 should be available in certain markets in June 2006. It is not clear whether the N72 will be sold alongside the N70 (6680 6682), but Nokia appears to target Eastern Europe and Asia with the N72 rather than Western European Markets and America North.
