Palm Foleo Subnotebook Compatible Smartphones

Posted on December 20, 2007 in Palm

Palm FoleoThe Palm Foleo looks like a subnotebook - but perhaps the greatest place of mobile phone accessories.

Roughly similar to the Nokia N800 and 770 in terms of concept, the Palm Foleo is a very compact Linux-based computer with Bluetooth and WiFi connections. Unlike Nokia variations, the Palm Foleo integrates closely with a Palm OS-based Smartphone Palm, or Windows-based.

The close integration makes the Palm Foleo an extension of the smartphone. There is no need to worry about timing and delicate software add-ons like Foleo has been specially designed to operate in conjunction with a compatible smartphones.

Foleo not just restricted to Palm-Palm say that most Windows Mobile devices should be able to work with Foleo with little or no adaptation. It should also be possible to synchronize Foleo with Symbian devices, BlackBerry and even the Apple iPhone should correct the software will be available (with a modest effort software, according to Palm). Palm says it is working with third party developers to extend the appeal of the Foleo.

Using a Linux computer as a front-end for Windows (or PalmOS) smartphones is certainly strange, but it looks promising. The Palm Foleo can Microsoft Office documents, PDF files and access smartphone mail and calendar appointments. In fact, anything you can do on your smartphone, you should be able to do on the Palm Foleo.

We said that the Palm Foleo was the biggest mobile accessory we can think-it has a 10 inch 1024×600 pixel display, a fairly large QWERTY keyboard, WiFi and Bluetooth, and it weighs about 1100 grammes (2.5 pounds). There is no internal hard disk-storage and CF uses SD memory cards. Battery life is rated at 5 hours, and the Foleo has an instant on / off function. We do not know the exact size, but the Foleo will be more comfortable for an airline seat Bac. The screen is not touch-sensitive, but it is controlled by a fairly typical “nipple” instead of a mouse.

The Palm Foleo also has a built-in Web browser Opera and the combined WiFi functionality and flexible operating system should mean that the Foleo is also quite capable as an ultraportable computer in its own right . However, at around $ 500 after $ 100 rebate, Foleo is not cheap (we have no idea how this could be in Europe, if he ever crosses the pond-our guess is about £ 300 / € 500).

It is better integrated with the phone as the Nokia N800, which is more independent device that T-Mobile Ameo, plus it’s a lot cheaper than HTC Maj. It is difficult to say if there is much of a market for this type of aircraft, but if there is, it could be a real winner for Palm.
