I dropped my phone in water and as a result the usb charging port stopped working. I bought this charging pod so I would still be able to use the phone. Your existing charging cable just plugs into the back of it and you can set the phone in it to charge. It is a lot easier to just place the phone in the pod instead of having to plug and unplug the cable all the time. I eventually replaced the phone and still like the pod and use it to charge my phone even though the usb port on this one works fine.
One thing to note is that if you use a clear skin (Best skins ever, invisible shield, or similar) you need to remove the small piece on back around the charging contacts or the phone won’t properly sit in the charger.
