A revision of the popular Sony Ericsson W800 Walkman phone, the Sony Ericsson W810 is a fairly minor upgrade, featuring an improved layout keyboard for playing multimedia, and is now a quad-band GSM, rather than sorting band. Sony Ericsson also added EDGE high-speed data, which allows faster access to the internet for those who have a compatible carrier and the Sony Ericsson W810 also supports over the air music downloading, to be a real EDGE benefit for those who have.

There are two models available is the Sony Ericsson W810c for mainland China, and the Sony Ericsson W810 is for Europe, the Americas, Asia Pacific and the rest of the world. Quad band support Sony Ericsson really help make some market penetration in the United States.

All other features of the W810 are essentially the same as the Sony Ericsson W800i (and also K750i and D750i). The excellent camera 2 megapixel autofocus rest, and there is a TFT screen 176×220 pixels 265000 colors, the mail client and Web browser, Bluetooth, infrared and USB connectivity, Java and a loudspeaker. Of course, what makes the Walkman range of handsets attractive is the integrated multimedia player and Sony Ericsson Disc2Phone software that allows users to easily transfer the tracks on the CD in the handset.

The internal memory is just 20Mb, but the W810 comes with a Memory Stick Pro 512 MB Duo card, expandable to 2 GB, which will be sufficient for many runways. There is a flight mode too, the phone functions can be turned off when needed, but users can still access the music player. The W810 also has an FM radio. Battery life is impressive, with up to 8 hours duration.

The W800i is our favourite phone of the year 2005, and the W810 is likely to be an excellent device if its predecessor is anything to go by. The W810 will be available early in the 1st quarter 2006.
