Sony Ericsson Z558i Z558c Smartphone Handwriting Recognition
Posted on January 7, 2008 in Sony Ericsson
Sony Ericsson Z558i / Z558c is a very close relative of the current Z550 handset, but with an unusual change - the Z558 supports handwriting recognition and comes with a touch screen.
Of course, handwriting recognition is not new, but this is the first time that Sony Ericsson have been included in a non-Symbian phone (ie a smartphone) . As far as we can tell, the Z558 is just a slight revision of the software and hardware of an existing run-of-the-mill combined.
Other than handwriting recognition, it is a standard midrange clamshell with a 176×220 pixel screen, 1.3 megapixel camera, Memory Stick Micro expandable memory, an FM radio, MP3 player and Bluetooth. The phone weighs the same as the Z550: 93 grams. Typically
devices such as this are selling especially in China and other countries with complex character sets where a traditional keyboard (either physically either on the screen) or paved digital (for SMS) is impossible.
So while the Sony Ericsson Z558 is a very pleasant to use, you probably will not see one in Europe except traders.
Sony Ericsson Z558 can recognize Chinese, Thai and English characters - and as usual with Sony Ericsson, the c is the option for China, with the Z558i destined for other markets.
